Serious About
Self Publishing E-Course: Lesson 6
Writing a book can be very
rewarding, not just financially but more so from the relationships
you develop and the lives that you can touch. Books can give you the
opportunity to forge partnerships that are uniquely bound by the
credibility that you have as an author.
While writing a book is not something that has to be difficult, it
is highly regarded because of the effort and energy that it
requires. Authors are respected by those who have not authored a
book, and by those who understand the process because they have
experienced it first hand.
The immediate benefit of being part of a fellowship of authors is
the testimonials and endorsements you can get from other authors.
I can't think of anyone who wouldn't be happy to have a widely
recognized person endorse them or their work. In this highly
competitive age of success coaches, mega-marketers and information
gurus, it's hard to separate the truth from the hype, but one thing
is for sure...
Nothing helps you win the hard won trust, and
even harder earned cash of a potential reader, client or subscriber than a
testimonial. A few words from a highly respected source can do wonders for your
credibility, book sales and exposure.
Maybe you subscribed to this e-course because Mike Litman, the powerhouse
personal coach behind Unleash Your
Greatness said, "If you want to write a book quickly, professionally and
affordably, you need Sanyika!"
Or, perhaps it was something that Ramon Williamson, the mastermind
behind "Brand Your Brilliance" said about me, "By focusing on completion and
not perfection, Sanyika got not one, or two, but four books written before I
did...it really challenged me to complete my book, "Six
Simple Things That Can Change Your Life"
Could it have been because you saw a
photo of me
with Jack Canfield, co-author of the mega-million bestselling Chicken
Soup for the Soul series, or Robert Allen, author of more than five
New York Times bestsellers?
If these endorsements weren't your primary reason, I'm willing to go out on the
limb and say they played a part in your decision to participate in this e-course
and I know for a fact they are the reason that more aspiring authors have joined
my self publishing coaching program since I started this e-course then in the
six months before offering it.
When I wrote my first book, "Crack 'Da Code: What Every College Student Needs
to Know About Money, Love & the Dream Job" I asked myself who would be
appealing to the college student that I was targeting with this book, who could
speak their language and still be creditable and respected among a large group?
Of course a Carson Daily, Britney Spears or P.Diddy would be easily recognizable
to college students, but the problem with these celebrities is they don't relate
to the everyday college experience, so I kept thinking...
The most critical thing to understand when you
are looking for testimonials, endorsements or advance praise is that the person
you are seeking should be relevant to your audience.
It would be great, phenomenal even, to get a
testimonial from Emeril Lagasse, the flamboyant chef who "BAMs" his way
around a kitchen in an pretty impressive fashion, but only if your book topic is
meant for a cookbook crowd.
So, after some research I found the perfect person to address my audience,
validate my message and help me generate media buzz. Miss USA®,
Shauntay Hinton.
She is someone who has just the right mix of
celebrity and best of all she could totally relate with the hard learned lessons
about money, credit and debt that many college students experience...
It so happens that the Howard University student turned beauty queen was in a
world of credit card debt and like many students didn't know where to turn for
help. While she credited her pageant win for getting the "debt monkey" off her
back, she candidly spoke out about the pitfalls of credit card debt and after
reading only a chapter of my book, agreed to write the Foreward and offer a
strong endorsement for the need for my a book to be mandatory reading for all
college students.
While I don't have the exact numbers, I can estimate that at least 30% of my
book sales are as a result of people finding me and my message through searching
for Miss USA® online,
or are impressed that someone so young and beautiful, could have "normal"
problems and be so open about talking about them.
Because I was willing to seek notable people who could champion my message and
ask if they would be willing to help me, they often responded favorably.
You can do the same
with your book!
Let me take a bit more of the mystery out of the process for you. Here are a few
simple things that you can do to get a winning endorsement:
- Research the best possible endorsement match
for your book and message
- Identify the best 3 to 5 notable persons who
you would like to be associated with
- Determine what would be the win-win for you
and the person you're asking for endorsement from and write a concise letter
or email outlining the points
- Identify your best chapter or most
compelling excerpt that could be sent with a testimonial request letter and
the date by when you need to receive a response
- Follow-up on your testimonial request, this
is the biggest factor in getting what you want
- Be prepared to ghost write the testimonial
for them. Believe it or not, you may be asked to write what you'd like them to
say and they will edit it
I can assure you, you will be pleasantly surprised by how many people are
willing to help by providing testimonials, endorsements and advance praise for
your book. Their support will better help you get your message out, and it's a
win-win, because you are now linked with that person and they also get more
exposure.
I feel a personal obligation to
help you get your message out, and my hope is that after taking this e-course
you feel even more passionate becoming an author.
