Serious About Self Publishing E-Course: Lesson 1

Ready to unleash the author in you? Well, now’s the time!

Welcome to the first day of the 7 day self publishing e-course on how to achieve your goals of becoming a published author.

Before I jump into the lesson, I want you to get the best value from the course, so don’t just glaze over the emails or keep them sitting in your inbox with the intention of “getting to it later”. Read them. AS SOON AS THEY ARRIVE. They’ll offer the information you want and need to move from procrastination to action and from idea to author.

But, before I go into that…

Let me properly introduce myself. I know where you are, because I’ve been there…

My name is Sanyika Calloway Boyce and just a few years ago my life was about to change, and I didn’t even know it. I had a high-paying, fast-paced job with the respect of my clients and a great relationship with my boss, I was ready to take my career to the next level, and then…

Everything in my world seemed to turn upside down, the telecommunication industry was going through huge consolidation, mega-mergers and complicated change and just when it seemed like all was well in my world, the rug got pulled out from under me…

With a deer-in-the-headlights look I called my best friend to tell her in a shaky voice that my job was in jeopardy and I had no idea what that meant other than I felt completely unprepared to climb into the life raft and ride the sea of change I saw before me.

I made a few other phone calls, but the call that changed everything—the one call that became my life preserver was to a man I’d met just a short time before. He called himself a life coach and challenged me when I first met him, as he did on the other end of the phone, about the quality of my life. With all that I had achieved in my career he simply asked, “Are you living your best life?”

I really didn’t know how to answer that, I knew it didn’t feel like my best life, but I also knew it was, until then-my safest life. I mumbled something into the phone and sighed several times. Honestly all I REALLY wanted was for him to give me the answers NOT ask more questions.

After a pause that seemed to last a lifetime he simply and plainly said, “Sanyika, I cannot tell you what to do, all I can say is from where I sit—it seems like you have one of two choices. You could either put on a nice conservative suit, complete with pearl earrings and perfectly kept hair, brush off your resume and start looking for another job or you can look at this as the chance you need to finally start living your best life.”

At the time I wasn’t quite sure if I liked or even understood the options but I knew one thing for sure; option one was NOT an option.

I worked very hard to become a Senior Manager, but I had also refused to conform to traditional standards of the conservative corporate look, and while I’d earned much respect of my co-workers, clients and bosses, I knew that many people still judge books by the cover…

Here’s what this is really all about, it’s about taking control of your life, it’s about turning your mess into a powerful message to touch the world, it’s about unleashing the book within you (whatever the topic or inspiration) and it’s about living your best life.

What it all boils down to is this…

  • In a second my life changed
  • In a weekend I made a powerful choice
  • In 60 minutes I learned more about myself than I had in 6 years AND
  • In 90 days I wrote and published my first book

But that’s only half the story…

Fast forward a little over two years and I now have the confidence, the hard learned lessons and the books under my belt to help you:

  • Avoid making costly printing mistakes
  • Avoid frustration and procrastination in bringing your book to life
  • Write your book, gain more exposure and build your credibility
  • Save time and money
  • Become a published author

Okay, let’s get started…

I can’t tell you how often I’m asked, “Is it really possible to write, publish and promote a book in 90 days or less?” It seems like the mind can’t, NO… won’t grasp the fact that the process doesn’t have to be hard or lengthy.

I understand the skepticism, because much of what the media conveys about authors and publishing is very 19th and early 20th century imagery. They paint visions of “War and Peace”, “Gone With The Wind” and wordy leather bound books but the literary world has changed.

The world has never been hungrier for information or more poised for what you have to offer. The thing for you to hang on to from the “old world” mentality is that publishing a book WILL make you more credible to the media and your primary audience because many of them still think like you once did…they buy into the “mystery and magic” of book writing.

The “secret” to writing is actually not in the writing at all. Most people will spend hours looking at blank screens or pages waiting for a touch of inspiration, but the truth is that the key to writing is…speaking.

Sounds crazy I know, but we are communicators by nature. Think about it…you’ve been talking for years. When you write like you speak, it flows more smoothly. Don’t try to come up with the perfect word (we tend to try to do this when writing) just imagine that you are talking to the person you want to read your book.

Think about something you do very well, maybe you have a hobby, like cooking or you are a great piano player, or maybe you want to write about your skill as a dynamic coach and how you move clients from procrastination to action or an effective make-up technique that you’ve used to boost your beauty consultant business, whatever you’re good at (and everyone is good at something) seems to come “naturally” to you, it’s almost automatic to you.

10 MINUTE WRITING SAMPLE CHALLENGE
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Now here’s you’re first exercise, don’t skip over it or come back to it later. (If you’re serious about being a published author-do this exercise) take 10 minutes and write (NO EDITING...just write) about what comes natural to you, or what you're most passionate about and in “chatting with a friend” simplicity, explain it.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Stuck?...If you’re stuck you’ve probably gotten stuck because you took the time to think about what you were going to write, searching for just the right words. When you are doing the activity or going through the motions that you’re about to describe they come automatically to you right?

Okay…don’t second guess yourself, whatever comes up…let it come out on paper (or your keyboard). Pretend that I’m right there in the room with you can you’re explaining it…

Ask yourself, "What do I want to tell the reader about...." and fill in the blank with the subject. I'm sure you can think of all sorts of things that you want to share.

Don’t feel like you have to write an instruction manual, just give me enough information so I’ll get the idea.
Done? Great, Now email it to me…don’t try to edit it or "fancy it up" (we’ll get to that later)

Just reply to this email and send me your 10-minute challenge writing sample. Or cut and paste this email address put Lesson 1 Writing Sample in the subject line.

One of the first things you’ll need to embrace when writing a book is allowing others to see your “unfinished” work. Most people will never get their book done because they are waiting for it to be perfect before they let anyone see it, or they are afraid to share their "secret" with the world. The best thing you can do is to tell others what you are working on, but the worst thing you can do is tell the wrong people about it.

There is a difference, if you love your sister but know that she's notoriously critical of you than she's not the person you want to share your idea with initially. Or if you are afraid of getting too many conflicting opinions about your topic, then you should go to your potential buyers for feedback and not a general audience.

Natural law says, “You’ll never receive what you’re not willing to release” So press the submit button and start getting used to “releasing” so you can “receive” all the benefits that came along with being an author.

I know this was a lot to read and take in. I’m so excited and have so much I want to share with you… I can’t possibly cover it all in this e-mail series. As promised, I will give you great information that you can use immediately.

But this is just the tip of the iceberg. My hope is that you are serious about becoming an author quickly, and affordably and that you will see the value of investing in your book idea.

As of today, there are still two OPEN slots in my hands-on self publishing coaching program. Interested? Send me an email:

The first step is making the decision to write your book, the next and just as critical step is having the structure, consistency and accountability you need to start right and finish strong.

Give your idea the best shot at reaching the people you most want to help while promoting it for the profit that it deserves to make. If you're serious about writing, publishing and promoting your book quickly, easily and affordably than it can be as easy as 1-2-3.
